Autumn Adventures in Yorkshire

Our Top Picks for October and November…

The evenings are drawing in and the leaves are turning a crisp golden colour. We know that the weather is changing but when there is somewhere warm and cosy with amazing interiors to retreat to, we don’t mind that the colder seasons are on the way.

With the crowds thinning out it is a lovely time to go exploring the famous and interesting sites nearby. This Autumn, escape the news and take a walking holiday in Yorkshire, plan a family get-together for a special occasion, or impress your other half with a romantic weekend away for just the two of you.

Here are our top to-do’s if you’re looking to get away in October and November…

bowes museum, Barnard Castle

1. Get Cultured

We love Barnard Castle market town, and the view of Egglestone Abbey, Barnard Castle School and Bowes Museum as you drive in are impressive. Bowes Museum is open daily and you will find a huge choice of exhibitions throughout the year and a playground and picnic area if you’re brave enough for al-fresco dining in Autumn! Read more about the Bowes Museum in our blog A day out in Barnard Castle.

For National Trust members, we recommend the captivating Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal near Ripon, North Yorkshire. This World Heritage Site has trails and footpaths, workshops, and a deer park (they’re coming into season so watch out). Read our blog A day out in Ripon for more inspiration to make the most of your day in the area!

Harewood House, Helmsley and York are also great spots for a day out.

2. Get Outdoors

We have some of the best walking in the UK, and with the number of picturesque spots in North Yorkshire greater than you can count, it’s a lovely time of year for a morning stroll or a brisk more challenging day out.

Aysgarth Falls is a popular spot in the Dales, and without the throngs of Summer visitors, it is very peaceful. It has even been said that salmon have been spotted there this time of year. We’ve also got tried and tested mountain and road biking routes in the North York Moors.

For a crisp walk along the sweeping beaches, we can highly recommend Fish and Chips by the coast at Saltburn by the Sea. Or if you prefer to enjoy the crisp leaves turning orange and golden hues then we recommend Thorp Perrow Arboretum near Bedale, North Yorkshire. There is stunning woodland and children love the exotic birds and animals.

Nobody needs to get left behind either on your escape to the countryside. With plenty of trees to sniff and fallen leaves to roll in, your four-legged friend is sure to enjoy a dog-friendly break to North Yorkshire too! Take a look at our dog-friendly holiday homes here…

3. Get Beer and Wine Tasting

For a rainy day, or on a group trip away when you’re looking for a good activity, head to Masham. The Black Sheep Brewery is a fantastic place to eat, drink and learn about brewing our favourite nationally popular cask ale. After a brewery tour enjoy a meal in the old malt chamber at the Baa…r & Kitchen, or at the White Bear in the town centre.

We’ve got a tried and tested Ale Trail around Richmond, and loved the micro bar Number 29 which serves local gins and ales with mouth-watering tapas or charcuterie sharing boards for groups. For a big group, the tasting room at Bon Coeur in Melsonby is only a short walk from two of our perfect bigger luxury holiday homes.

4. Visit Somewhere Unique

Enjoy plenty of scenic drives through the countryside to many different local attractions including the award-winning Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes. You’ll hear some cheesy jokes, learn about the history of cheese, watch skilled cheesemakers at work, as well as try some mouth-watering complimentary samples. Discover the Yorkshire Dales and find out what else you can do.

Visit the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham and learn about the history of brewing the much-loved cask, kegs and bottled beers. Visit the bubbling brewhouse and the fermenting room with strong aromas of English hops and malted barley. Then find out about the scientific process of brewing to put you in the mood to taste these award-winning ales.

In the beautiful market town of Thirsk, you can discover The World of James Herriot, one of Yorkshire’s top multi-award-winning tourist attractions covering the fascinating life and work of James ‘Alf’ Wight – the legendary local vet and one of the most popular writers of the twentieth century. Wight wrote best-selling books using his pen name of James Herriot, all about his experience of being a young Thirsk-based vet. Read out how the whole family can learn more about being the Yorkshire vet.

5. Explore the Local Towns

The local towns have plenty to offer all year through. In the autumn months, Richmond, North Yorkshire, is the perfect place to wrap up warm and explore.

Revel in the 11th Century castle, fine historic buildings, museum, and plenty of riverside walks. Around the large cobbled marketplace, there is an extensive choice of pubs and restaurants to choose from. This is one of Britain’s most beautiful market towns.

On an Autumn night, enjoy an evening at The Station, a stunning Victorian railway building that has been beautifully refurbished to house a café, award-winning artisan food shops, and art gallery. There’s also a 2-screen cinema that has been named by the Guardian as one of the Top 10 Independent cinemas!
