Don’t miss the flourishing market held on ‘the cobbles’ in the Market Place every Wednesday.
Pick up some locally produced food from any of the independent butchers, green grocers, bakers and specialist shops on the high street and make yourself a picnic to enjoy at the impressive ruins of a fine medieval monastery, Egglestone Abbey.
After your picnic, stretch your legs and walk along the river to the 12th century Barnard Castle in the heart of the town, where you can explore the ruins, as well as visit the sensory garden.
The main attraction is the Bowes Museum, an impressive French style chateau, surrounded by gardens and parkland. The museum houses a collection of European fine and decorative arts and is regarded as one of the most significant museums outside of London.
The current exhibition being shown from now until January 6th 2019 is ‘Catwalking: Fashion through the Lens of Chris Moore’ which shows you world leading fashion designs from Vivienne Westwood, Chanel, Dior & Jean Paul Gaultier and many more – alongside images from the king of catwalk photography, Chris Moore.
