Things to do in Barnard Castle

For our guests staying at Greenbank Barns, our large luxury holiday accommodation in North Yorkshire, Barnard Castle known by locals as ‘Barney’ is only a 15 minute drive away and is a must visit for a day out. Experience the rich history, heritage and beauty that the unique market town of Barnard Castle enjoys with plenty to do for all ages...

Barnard Castle is a haven for discerning shoppers and treasure seekers, with many antique shops as well as shops selling gorgeous interiors, clothing, local crafts and gifts. At the top of the high street is the Market Cross which was built in 1747 and has had many uses since. Try and spot the two bullet holes in the weather vane which are a result of a shooting competition between a volunteer soldier and a local gamekeeper in 1804.

If you like the look of Greenbank Barns, pop into Niche Living at the top of the high street and speak to the team who designed all of the barn's stunning interiors. Don’t miss the flourishing market held on ‘the cobbles’ in the Market Place every Wednesday.

Pick up some locally produced food from any of the independent butchers, greengrocers, bakers and specialist shops on the high street and make yourself a picnic to enjoy at the impressive ruins of a fine medieval monastery, Egglestone Abbey.

After your picnic, stretch your legs and walk along the river to the 12th century Barnard Castle in the heart of the town, where you can explore the ruins, as well as visit the sensory garden.

The main attraction is the Bowes Museum, an impressive French-style chateau, surrounded by gardens and parkland. The museum houses a collection of European fine and decorative arts and is regarded as one of the most significant museums outside of London.
