Each year, on 8th March we celebrate International Women’s Day, which is a historical day dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women throughout history and all across the globe.
The day, collectively founded by women, also brings attention to gender parity and women’s rights. Of course, the global celebration of International Women’s Day is a time for reflection of how far women have come, advocacy for what is still needed, and action to continue breaking down barriers.
This year, International Women’s Day will be celebrated with the special 2020 campaign theme, #EachforEqual, which promotes the concept that an “equal world is an enabled world” and “individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.”
To celebrate this day we wanted to introduce you to a couple of our most influential females at Holiday at Home and find out a bit more about them…
1. Tell us a little bit about you!
I am one of the owners of Holiday at Home, and some of the properties within the collection. I grew up here in North Yorkshire, and after moving away for university then work I moved back about 18 months ago to become get involved in the business and work with my brother Will.
2. What do you love most about your property and running it as a business?
I think that the interaction with so many people is what makes this business special. You meet such diverse groups of family and friends, yet they are all here to experience their own little slice of luxury – whether just for the weekend or for a week. As we market only high-end properties, that also comes with its daily challenges to keep them top spec. I like to pore over the reviews and see what little tweaks we can make so they keep improving and repeat guests see new things each time. Will is the creative one with a fantastic eye for detail, so I am not very involved in the interiors.
3. How will you recognise International Women’s Day?
For me it is about reading inspirational stories from communities around the UK or figureheads around the world who keep pushing for change. We’re incredibly privileged in this country to have the women before us push for our equal access to opportunity. The new drive in recent years has been on women in business, and so we are celebrating our many female holiday property owners.
1. Tell us a little bit about you!
I live in Richmond, North Yorkshire with my partner Mark and have an 18-year-old daughter Macie, who is currently studying at Loughborough University. Currently, I am working alongside Mark in his property development business of 22 years, building, converting and renovating properties. I focus on helping with the design process and the interiors including kitchens, bathrooms and decor which is my real passion!
2. Tell us a bit about Maison Cottage?
We brought Maison Cottage approx 9 years ago… It had been empty and derelict for 45 years so we renovated it into a beautiful cottage but when sadly and unexpectedly last year it became vacant we knew with its amazing views and position it just had to be a holiday cottage. The cottage I knew would look amazing with a contemporary look. I picked lots of deep colours to complement the original features of the cottage, with simple furniture and accessories. I feel It works well having the clean lines and a Scandinavian look
3. Do you have an influential female figure in your own life?
I am inspired in what I do by my late mum who for a ‘woman of her generation could do and did anything and everything she turned her hand to ‘… a perfectionist.
Mother’s Day is fast approaching (Sunday 22nd March – in case you’ve forgotten)
