A weekend with the family...

There's a lot to fit into a weekend with the family, from exploring, eating, drinking to relaxing and spending quality time together. We spent a heavenly few days at Holly House Farm and picked our best bits at the luxury Yorkshire holiday cottage Austin. Here's a look at what we got up to on our family-friendly weekend escape to Yorkshire...

Arriving for a weekend at Austin, a family-friendly Yorkshire holiday cottage situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, you will fall in love with its cosy welcoming charm. If you can manage to tear yourself away from the stylish interiors, log burning stove and garden hot tub you can enjoy an easy stroll into the market town of Richmond, North Yorkshire. It is one of England’s largest cobbled marketplace, and is filled with unique local shops and a host of pubs and eateries; this makes the town a vibrant and popular Yorkshire holiday destination with tourists and locals alike.

For families, head to La Piazza for a delicious pizza or pasta with a lively Italian atmosphere. If it’s just the two of you on a romantic retreat to Yorkshire, enjoy a nightcap with some cocktails and tapas at Number 29. Head home to your cottage hot tub for an evening dip in the tub, then settle down in front of the log burning stove with a glass of wine, to plan tomorrow’s adventure…

Richmond has so much to offer, with its 11th Century castle, fine historic buildings, museum, riverside walks and quirky cobbled streets and squares. So set your alarm to make the most of your day. On Saturdays make sure you don’t miss the vibrant outdoor market, open all year round.

Start the day by enjoying an early morning stroll from your luxury Yorkshire holiday cottage across country lanes to one of our favourite breakfast spots; Middlemoor Farm Café in Hudswell, North Yorkshire. Marvel at the stunning and peaceful Yorkshire Dales views, over a homemade breakfast with only the best local produce to fuel the start of your adventure. It’s also good to note that Richmond is the perfect dog-friendly holiday destination, with plenty of varied walks to enjoy with your pooches as well as dog-friendly pubs and restaurants.

Follow the picturesque riverside trail along the River Swale through Hudswell Woods into Richmond. Visit Richmond Castle and stroll around the castle walls, with the most impressive views of the town and follow the paths to Richmond Bridge. The other direction takes you to the historic Easby Abbey. Visit the Station, a riverside Victorian railway building, where you can spend hours getting lost exploring award-winning artisan food shops, an art gallery and a cinema that has recently been named by the Guardian as one of the Top 10 Independent cinemas. Pick up some freshly baked treats to take home for tomorrow morning’s breakfast.

La Rustique in Richmond is perfect if you’re looking for a spot of romance, offering traditional French cuisine amongst its Parisian-style decor. For some casual pub grub, drop into the Holly Hill Inn for a pie and a pint en-route home.

Have a snoozy Sunday morning in your luxury Yorkshire holiday cottage with your breakfast goodies from the Angels Share at The Station and treats from your complimentary hamper. Make the most of your final day relaxing in your garden hot tub admiring views of Yorkshire’s finest countryside.

For a day out with a difference for all the family, head over to Middleham, Only a short drive across the Yorkshire Dales, its 20 minutes away and a hub for horse racing and history. Visit the 12th Century Middleham Castle, best known as the childhood home to Richard III, before heading to Yorkshire’s famous top racing stables and gallops.

You’ll be spoilt for choice of where to enjoy a pint in Middleham, with plenty of pubs dotted around the market square. You can often spot the majestic horses being led through the market square on their way to the gallops.

Or head out of the village and you will find even more great eateries to discover. We like The Blue Lion in East Witton and the Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton, as well as the fantastic fast flowing Aysgarth Falls as featured in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

With children in tow, you should visit the Forbidden Corner where there is magical mystery aplenty for all ages. It’s well described as a labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises, where you are never quite sure what you’ll find lurking around the next corner. Created in a four-acre garden in the heart at Tupgill Park, it’s an attraction not to miss!  Next door is The Saddle Room, a restaurant converted from horse stables with delicious food on offer. We can recommend their traditional Sunday roast with possibly the largest Yorkshire puddings you’ll ever see!

Whether you’re coming to Richmond for a family holiday or on a romantic break, looking for a relaxing getaway or a fun-filled escape, you won’t be disappointed with what Yorkshire has to offer whilst staying at this luxury Yorkshire holiday cottage.
