Whitwell Nook

While you feel Whitwell Nook is perfectly private, among acres of stunning countryside, there are plenty of places to explore on your doorstep. Just down the road is Ellerton Lakes, home to a farm shop and cafe as well as a water sports centre, which is a popular choice for canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and open-water swimming.

It is a short drive to Scorton village, where you'll find a raised green, a village shop, post office and The Heifer Pub & Restaurant and The Farmers Arms, both serving home-cooked food. After a bite to eat, try the charming circular walk that starts from Scorton village centre at Scorton Lakes. Taking approximately 1 - 1.5 hours and with a parking place just outside of the village, this gentle trail loops through the surrounding countryside and small woods.

Kiplin Hall and Gardens is also less than a mile away, a historic house with gardens to visit, a visitor centre, cafe and wonderful scenic walks (seasonal opening times).

It is approximately a 20-minute drive to the cobbled market town of Richmond, alongside the River Swale, where you can enjoy the perfect blend of independent shops, traditional pubs and quirky cafes. Saturday is market day in Richmond, where you can pick up local produce, fruit, veg and much more. Catterick and Bedale are also within easy reach. Northallerton is 20 minutes away with a vibrant high street and the much-loved Betty's Tea Rooms. Northallerton has a traditional market on Wednesdays and Saturdays as well as a monthly farmers' market. The Black Horse Inn at Kirkby Fleetham is a beautiful village inn a few miles away with great dining options.
