Leyburn is an ideal base for exploring, hiking, cycling and sightseeing for all ages. The local tourist office has a wealth of routes and maps here.
Explore Middleham Castle, once the childhood home of Richard III, where you can relive the castle’s illustrious history and unlock the deeds of its great owners. Make sure to visit Cauldron Falls or Aysgarth Falls, Yorkshire’s finest waterfalls, with a great viewing spot to take the perfect Insta pic too. Pop in for dinner with the whole family at The Blue Lion or treat yourself to the award-winning seafood menu at The Wensleydale Heifer.
If you want to give your legs a rest and travel in style, hop on the Wensleydale Railway; this heritage line runs diesel locomotives and steam trains, with a station in Leyburn. Hop on board and take the scenic route to Redmire and Bolton Castle, one of the country’s best preserved 14th-century medieval castles. Look out for the sword fighting demonstrations and falconry displays.
A Day Out in Leyburn Discover the Yorkshire Dales
If you have kids (big or small), you must explore the award-winning Forbidden Corner, a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises (make sure you’re wearing your waterproofs), created in 4 acres of countryside. This is a day out with a difference, open April – December, and is a must-see near to our places to stay in the Yorkshire Dales. After exploring, head to the next door Saddle Room restaurant. Once a racehorse stable, you can sit by a cosy fire or feel immersed in the history whilst enjoying great food and ales.
Jervaulx Abbey is equally stunning, where children can run around or enjoy a picnic. Locals love a stop-off at Brymor Ice Cream just along the road before heading home.
The largest auction house outside of London, Tennants Auctioneers has been running since the late Victorian period and hosts over 100 auctions of fine art, antiques and specialist collectables each year. Get involved and find something special to take home to mark your memorable holiday.
The Garden Rooms, a multi-purpose visitor centre and their popular café or elegant bistro have great food, especially the Sunday roast. Auction viewings and live sales, free galleries showcasing rare treasures, free visiting exhibitions and a diverse programme of live music, lectures and events mean there is always something to see at Tennants.
