While we Yorkshire folk may be proud of our county, it isn’t without good reason...
You’ve come to the right place if you are looking for an amazing area to explore. Discover the best of North Yorkshire’s market towns, the stunning North York Moors and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales on your family break…
Here are our top 5 things to do in Yorkshire:
For a breath of fresh air make sure to stroll across the Yorkshire Dales National Park with small local trails from Reeth down to Masham and all that lies to the West beyond, while for the walkers among you who prefer a plan make sure you have your map in hand. For 360-degree awesome views of the North Yorkshire Moors – where on a clear day you can see all the way across to the Yorkshire Dales – zip up the dog-friendly trails to the summit of Roseberry Topping, not far from Osmotherley and Helmsley.
If you prefer to experience the outstanding scenery with a leisurely drive through the Dales then head over to Wensleydale and the main town Hawes, with the Hardraw Force and Aysgarth Falls waterfall both of which film lover will recognise from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. En route discover The Wensleydale Railway which runs between Leeming Bar and Redmire, offering a scenic and pleasant journey through Herriot Country. Why not catch the famous steam train to Bolton Castle for a great day out? Fun for all ages on your family break in Yorkshire.
Richmond’s market town is a treasure trove for visitors with its 100-foot high tower at Richmond Castle which has breath-taking views over Swaledale and the Yorkshire Dales. Sitting high above the River Swale on a rocky promontory, the great castle of Richmond is among the oldest Norman stone castles in Britain, built by William the Conqueror’s cousin. A good route to follow is in the footsteps of Richmond’s legendary disappearing drummer boy.
Masham is also a must-visit market town with traditional features that have endured over the years, from its butchers, bakers and shops – there are no candlestick makers as of yet. For those that love a tipple, Masham boasts three breweries including the famous Theakston’s headquarters and the Black Sheep Brewery, as well as an independent gin distillery at Corks and Cases.
For a day out for all the family on your Yorkshire break, head over to Middleham, a hub for horse racing and history. Visit Middleham Castle which was once home to Richard III before heading to the famous Middleham stables and gallops. With children in tow make sure to visit the Forbidden Corner – it’s well described as a labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises you will love to get lost in, created in a four-acre garden in the heart at Tupgill Park.
