Gayles Hall Barns have been a huge success since launching. They became part of Holiday at Home’s collection of luxury retreats in May 2019. We interviewed the owners and their interior designer Niche Interiors, the same team who brought you the stunning Greenbank Barns, to discover how the project came about….
A Two Year Project
The development at Gayles has been incredible. Just two years ago this collection of barns and a sheep shed was unrecognisable, they were dilapidated to say the least. Now Shearing Shed and Sheep Dip perfectly balance traditional features with contemporary interiors. They have certainly raised the bar in self-catering holiday homes in North Yorkshire.
Derelict barns and a Grade II listed building status would have put many owners off. However, having a wealth of experience from developing Greenbank Barns meant Tim and Helen Westgarth had a clear design concept in mind. The challenge was to create modern design that would still enhance the Grade II listed building features.
Helen says, “We wanted to make it different from our other holiday homes. To be braver and bolder with the colours and fabrics, while adding for example antique chairs that were an ode to the building’s heritage.”
When Niche Interiors first visited the property there was no roof, electric, walls or floors. Today this extraordinary barn conversion exhibits all that is great about modern interior and architectural design in the home.
One example? The glass atrium housing Shearing Shed’s stairwell. You summit the suspended staircase to exposed stonework and a wrought iron radiator. Yet you take in the views from the rich velvet sofa with its Linwood Jungle Jive fabric cushions. Perfection!
Victoria Savage, Niche Interiors’ designer, says, “With a holiday let, how we design each bedroom is a bit different. You might have five couples staying, so we come up with different themes that all aim to please. People tend to gravitate towards their favourite look.”
Our favourite room in Shearing Shed? The large and stylish kitchen which flaunts a unique hexagonal shape, rich salmon pink walls and sage green kitchen units. The effect is emphasised by the floor-to-ceiling French doors and windows which open onto the rear garden. A more relaxed space, we also love the sunroom; it’s very fun, informal and perfect for playing games.
Adjoining Shearing Shed, without losing any characteristics or privacy, is the two-bedroom barn Sheep Dip. L-shaped with large striking rooms, the house has a fantastic flow. There is also plenty of outside space for enjoying this cottage with a hot tub & BBQ area, also accessible straight out from the master bedroom’s bi-folding doors.
This bedroom is an absolute winner, and would make a perfect Yorkshire mini-moon destination… Victoria from Niche Living says, “The master bedroom is one of the most romantic rooms I have ever done. The luxurious navy work amazingly to compliment the soft pink.”
Sheep Dip’s most talked about feature in the Holiday at Home office is the fantastic Mulberry duck wallpaper, highlighting high ceilings and the skylights above. The rooms all have style, and envelope you in a quiet way while offering their own surprise.
Every space has been used to the max. The ten guests staying in Shearing Shed on their perfect family holiday in Yorkshire, or the four guests in Sheep Dip who wanted a a dog-friendly holiday in the UK, certainly have plenty of room.
Having launched in May, this stunning duo of self-catering holiday homes outside Richmond, North Yorkshire still has some availability this Summer. Book Sheep Dip for four guests or Shearing Shed for 10 guests. Have a bigger group? Combined they’re the perfect big group getaway. It is a location not to be missed given the chance!
