About The Bothy

With an upside-down approach, this luxury country cottage is a unique retreat for up to four guests

Recently refurbished into a bijou country cottage in the Yorkshire Dales, this two-bedroom luxury holiday home features a quirky upside-down layout; the bedrooms and bathroom are on the ground floor and the living room and kitchen are upstairs.

Arrive into the boot room and you are faced with a full wall map of the Yorkshire Dales, so you can be sure to get your bearings before you go out exploring. Wind up the wrought iron spiral staircase to the living area; please note this staircase is not well suited to guests with limited mobility.

The first floor features the open plan kitchen, dining and living room which overlooks the private patio and the grounds beyond. Restored original wooden floorboards and the log burner set into the chimney breast give this country cottage in Yorkshire a cosy feel. Settle into the comfy sofa or the two armchairs in front of the smart TV. The kitchen cupboards are well-equipped, and there is an electric oven, induction hob, and dishwasher. Sit at the breakfast bar or the dining table for meals for up to four guests, whilst a door leads out to the private patio for alfresco dining.

Situated next door to The Bothy is it’s sister property The Coach House, a large one-bed romantic retreat, perfect for couples looking to escape.

Book both properties together for up to 6 guests, making Scargill Lodge Cottages well suited to extended family or an escape with friends. The perfect country cottage in the Yorkshire Dales for a family getaway or couples looking to escape the everyday ordinary.

The bedrooms are on the ground floor at either end of this country cottage. The modern bathroom sits between the bedrooms, which has a walk-in shower.

The master bedroom is a traditional cottage style with exposed stonework and beams running across the vaulted ceiling. The bed is king-sized with Egyptian cotton sheets, and the added luxury of a freestanding roll-top bathtub. With plenty of space, there are two armchairs and a kettle for making a morning coffee without having to head up to the kitchen.

A second bedroom features two extra-large twin beds and has warm cosy tones. On one side of the room is the dressing table plus there is hanging space, a large chest of drawers and a hairdryer. There are also tea making facilities in here with a kettle.

Stone steps lead out from the sitting room to the enclosed patio. Facing south-west, this is a pretty spot for the afternoon and evening sunshine. There is space for alfresco dining on the wooden chairs and table, and there’s a charcoal BBQ.

Although the surrounding grounds are private, for a morning stretch of the legs or a longer stroll, a public footpath starts on the other side of the garden gate through the fields where you can explore the Yorkshire Dales from this country cottage.

The property is accessed from a private driveway with two neighbouring properties within the grounds. One of these properties is a family home, and the other property is The Coach House. This cottage can be booked alongside the neighbouring Coach House for a group of 6 guests. For Parking please follow the signs for parking, there is allocated parking to the right of the properties infront of the fence by the big tree. Feel free to unload your car near the door but once unloaded move it to the parking place.

On arrival, you will find a locally sourced welcome hamper. The modern kitchen has a full kitchen inventory for a home from home experience, and a starter pack of logs, kindling, and luxury toiletries are included. There is wi-fi throughout.

Guests should note this property features a traditional wrought iron spiral staircase, making the access more restricted for some guests. For more information on this feature please see photographs or contact the team for more details.

This is a pet-free property. Please note there is no washing machine.

In the local area…

The Bothy is located near Barnard Castle on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, with plenty of beautiful walks straight from the front door as well as being within easy reach of the Lakes District National Parks and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There are plenty of great places to eat and drink nearby, the closest being The Milbank Arms in Barningham where you can enjoy the welcoming Yorkshire atmosphere in the main bar or catch up around the open log fire. During Spring and Summer months they also offer an outdoor kitchen. While in Barningham, pop in to Coghlans for some local deli shop produce as well as a great selection of ‘a la carte’ dine-at-home meal options. If you fancy something a little more active while on holiday, there is a great walking route from Barningham, across the Yorkshire moors with fabulous views from the Pennines to the sea before arriving at the large man-made Stang Forest with a walk through a corner of the forest on the route of an ancient pack-horse way. The walk emerges from the forest into arable countryside. Pleasant field-walking follows, taking you through the tiny hamlet of Thwaite before entering into the wild, wooded River Greta gorge in the area known as Brignall Banks. The walk emerges from the gorge into farming land for a short walk back to Barningham Village.

Further afield, the picturesque village of Romaldkirk has the Rose and Crown and Mickleton has The Crown, both with great menus for a delicious lunch, a more substantial evening meal or to just enjoy a drink in front of the roaring fire.

If you can’t bring yourself to spend time away from your holiday home, there are plenty of fabulous farm shops nearby to pick up some produce to eat in the garden. Cross Lanes Organic Farm Shop is located only a few minutes away on the A66, with a food hall where you can stock up when you arrive and a cafe. It also holds Bistro evenings at weekends and a number of events outdoors throughout the year. The ever-popular Mainsgill Farmshop is also nearby with a vast selection of award-winning local produce as well as traditionally home-reared meats, a delicatessen and an award-winning bakery. Pop in and meet the animals, which include Doris, Delilah and Camelot the camels as well as llamas, lambs and pigs before stocking up on local produce or eat in the traditional tea room.

Barnard Castle is only a 10 minute drive away and is a must-visit for a day out. Experience the rich history, heritage and beauty that the unique market town offers, renowned for its small independent shops selling cheeses, breads, antiques, interiors and gifts. Barnard Castle’s market day is held on ‘the cobbles’ in the marketplace every Wednesday. The main attraction is the Bowes Museum, an impressive French-style chateau, surrounded by gardens and parkland. The museum houses a collection of European fine and decorative arts and is regarded as one of the most significant museums outside of London.

Richmond, is slightly further afield, 20 minutes drive away and is known as the ‘jewel’ in the heart of North Yorkshire. With an 11th Century castle, a cobbled marketplace with museums and monuments steeped in history, the fast-flowing River Swale and some of Britain’s most picturesque scenery, Richmond offers the perfect place to unwind from everyday life, leaving in its place a sense of calm and clean country air.

Teesdale is a big draw for botanists with some of England’s rarest upland plants found here.  Some of the most impressive sections of the Pennine Way National Trail are found in Teesdale and there are numerous excellent circular walks.
