Knaresborough is a market and spa town full of surprises, a warren of medieval streets and stone staircases that weave their way up and down the hill. As well as the famous Mother Shipton's Cave, enjoy picturesque riverside walks, a 14th century castle and plenty of great restaurants and cafes to choose from. On a sunny day, we like to simply sit by the river and enjoy the tranquil view of passing boats with a local Brymor ice cream...
Visit the unique Mother Shipton’s Cave and the Petrifying Well, one of Yorkshire's top attractions and one of the oldest attractions in England. Visitors can walk along the woodland path that winds alongside the river and through what remains of the Royal Forest of Knaresborough, become enchanted by the park’s natural beauty, mesmerized by the petrifying well and fascinated by Mother Shipton’s story. Behold the mystical powers of the mystical water that turns all it touches to stone!
Don't forget your picnic as there are three picnic areas and two children's play areas. One of these is a brand-new adventure playground, making it a great place to visit for a family friendly day out.
Weave your way up cobbled streets and stone staircases to the top of the hill, where you will find Knaresborough castle perched on the cliffs with stunning views overlooking the River Nidd. Take a tour of the castle and discover the medieval 14th-century history of the King’s chamber, visit the dungeon and scurry through the secret underground exit.
Stroll around the market place in the centre of town with lots of local shops and great places to eat. On a Wednesday stalls fill the market place, offering local produce at the ever-popular Knaresborough market.
Hop on the train into Harrogate for a bit more shopping, and glide over the imposing railway viaduct looking down on the River Nidd - an amazing view. Make sure you try a slice of homemade cake at the famous Betty's tea room whilst you're there.
