Nestled in County Durham, Barnard Castle is a small bustling market town, with heritage sites, lovely views of River Tees, independent shops and plenty of dining options. The surrounding countryside is part of the North Pennines AONB, and there are plenty of exciting family-friendly activities for visitors staying in our cottages near Barnard Castle. The main attraction is Bowes Museum, which houses a collection of European fine and decorative arts regarded as one of the most significant collections outside London. Try not to spend too long in the gift shop as there is plenty to discover on the high street, with antique shops as well as independent shops selling gorgeous interiors, clothing, local crafts and boutique gifts.
Built-in the style of a French Chateau, the 19th-century Bowes Museum is one of the best places to visit in England. It is considered to be one of the most significant museums in the country, spouting lush formal gardens and surrounding woodlands.

Egglestone Abbey to Barnard Castle circular: The charming ruins of the small monastery of Premonstratensian ‘white canons’ is picturesquely set above a bend in the River Tees. The walk from the abbey to the 12th century Barnard Castle partly follows the river, and takes around 50 minutes each way. Explore.
Deepdale Nature Reserve: A few minutes walk from Barnard Castle, this is one of Teesdale’s most beautiful woodlands. There is a good network of footpaths with footbridges and stepping stones across the Deepdale Beck and the Ray Gill. Explore.
