Step inside the sitting room, with oak flooring, a games table featuring Pool & Table Tennis, and richly coloured comfy sofas. The log burner is just waiting to be lit. Sit back and relax with gorgeous views of the Yorkshire hills through the floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the house. Big country house breaks have never been as chic.
Walk through to the spacious dining room and snug in the oldest part of the house. The double-height ceiling boasts original wooden beams, and the arrow-slit windows the exposed stone walls are a lovely traditional feature. Contemporary interior designs pair with antique pieces, sure to impress the whole family. The bespoke dining table was handmade locally and can seat twelve guests comfortably. Settle down after dinner into the incredibly comfortable sofas in the sung. In front of the warm glow of the log burning stove enjoy a film on the large Smart TV. It’s a perfect and cosy space to switch off and recharge.
A stunning feature of this large holiday home is the farmhouse-style kitchen. Its hexagonal shape makes it unique, with large full-height windows opening straight onto the patio garden. The central island and barstools are a perfect place for a relaxed morning coffee or a late-night glass of wine out of the separate wine cooler. Stock up at our favourite local grocery shop Mainsgill Farm Shop, a 10-minute drive away with its own café.
The Shoulder of Mutton in Kirkby Hill is a couple of miles away, a good local for food and drinks. Gilling West and Ravensworth are also pretty local villages full of traditional Yorkshire stone houses and a pub. We highly recommend a visit to Gilling’s The White Swan, especially Wednesday evening’s burger night.
The historic and picturesque market town of Richmond is a 10-minute drive away. Here, explore the 100-foot high tower at Richmond Castle sitting high above the River Swale. There are breathtaking views over Swaledale and plenty of riverside walks. The town’s large cobbled market place has traditional tea shops, an array of shops, and a fantastic Saturday market full of local produce.
Barnard Castle is eight miles in the opposite direction. Visit the popular Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle and Raby Castle, coupled with a trip to the weekly farmer’s market. The quaint high street has a wide choice of interesting shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants for every taste.
Gayles Hall Barns are easily accessible Yorkshire holiday cottages; the closest train stations are Darlington and Northallerton, and it is an hour’s drive to Newcastle airport.
