About New York Public Library

Whether looking for an adventure or a true refuge, you will revel in this luxury lodge style holiday home.

New York Public Library offers guests the chance to relax in a peaceful yet inspirational environment while enjoying the height of luxury in the three unique bedrooms plus a newly renovated stylish annex which is ideal for a couple looking for some privacy. The layout of this luxury yet contemporary lodge-style holiday home is perfect for a large group looking for Yorkshire holiday accommodation with a difference.

Designed and built by acclaimed writer, art collector and curator, Greville Worthington, this luxurious lodge is close to the historic market town of Richmond and was created as a calming Yorkshire retreat for guests of any age. Greville took inspiration for New York Public Library from a Japanese wood-burning craft that preserves and enhances the beauty of wood over time, which resulted in the dark wood exterior providing guests with a truly unique setting, unlike any other luxury Yorkshire self-catering holiday cottage.

It’s important to note that this property is not in New York, nor is it a library or even open to the public! The owner, a gentleman of great creative thought, lives a nearby deconsecrated former church, part of which is based on the old public library in York, and that’s how the ‘new York public library’ found its name.

For, just like its name, this striking holiday home is totally unexpected.

The main entrance to this three-bedroom luxury lodge is via large glass sliding doors, which take you straight into the heart of the property; a spacious and impressive living and dining area where guests can indulge with friends and family, or relax whilst taking in the views of the countryside.

Carefully selected interiors and art pieces create an inspiring and eclectic living area, including some well-considered Damien Hirst pieces which adorn the walls in the lounge area and in pride of place, a table football machine. This luxury lodge style home will stick in your mind for years to come thanks to its distinctive features.

Upstairs is just as impressive, with two double bedrooms each with sliding doors opening on to the south-facing sun terrace. The master bedroom has a feature roll bath in the bedroom and a further en-suite. The third bedroom is smaller, suitable for children has two single divan beds. There is also a house bathroom with shower, toilet, and washbasin.

The separate annex provides a super king-size bed and en-suite facilities with a private outdoor seating area.

From all aspects of the lodge, guests can view the ever-changing acres of private park and woodlands which play a major part in the overall experience of New York Public Library and be amongst an outdoor space which is ideal for entertaining or quiet relaxation. Enjoy your own private, jacuzzi style hot-tub, a unique art installation created by architect and designer Amanda Levete, enjoy an outdoor cooking experience at the Patagonia Grill Station, relax at the fire pit while the children can explore the garden treehouse with comfy seating and a TV which has Netflix for the kids to keep up to date with their favourite TV shows.

Sour Beck runs through the field opposite and there are plenty of great picnic sites to be found. It’s a short walk to the bluebell woodland gardens which has a superb collection of rare trees and shrubs including bamboos, magnolias and witch hazels.

There is free wi-fi throughout this luxurious lodge and ample parking for up to five cars. The modern kitchen has a full inventory for that home from home experience, including a large fridge and cooker and separate wine cooler. A washing machine and tumble dryer are available. Outside, there is outdoor seating alongside the BBQ (charcoal included) and pizza oven. All our holiday homes include high-quality bed linen, towels, bathrobes, luxury toiletries, a starter pack for the kitchen, fire, and washroom, and of course a locally sourced welcome hamper.

In the area…

New York Public Library is fantastic because it feels rural, yet there are shops less than a mile away. Stock up for the outdoor Patagonian grilling station by heading to Premier Meats in Colburn for a wide choice and a small greengrocer. Next door is a small local café, Rare Bistro.

A few hundred metres away towards Catterick Garrison is the Nisa filling station and Lidl, with a small Co-Op supermarket and Boots chemist just beyond. In Catterick Garrison you will find Aldi and a large Tesco, plus other shops and facilities including a cinema and gym.

New York Public Library is a couple of miles from the market town of Richmond, commonly known as ‘The Gateway to The Dales’. With its 11th Century castle, fine historic buildings, cobbled market place, and hidden corners, it is a treasure trove for visitors. We recommend Rustique, a popular French restaurant, and Barretts for the food. Millgate House Gardens overlooks the River Swale with the waterfalls in the background, described as “one of the most surprising & fascinating gardens in the North of England”.

Use our guides to explore the Yorkshire Dales, enjoy the pretty local market towns, or find family-friendly days out in the area.
