Whether looking for an adventure or a refuge, you will revel in this luxury lodge...

New York Public Library offers a chance to relax in a peaceful yet inspirational environment while enjoying the height of style. The layout of this contemporary holiday home is perfect for a group looking for Yorkshire holiday accommodation with a difference...

It’s important to note that this property is not in New York, nor is it a library or even open to the public! The owner, a gentleman of great creative thought, lived in a nearby deconsecrated church for 20 years before it became the stunning Aquarius Rising, part of which is based on the old public library in York. And that's how the 'New York Public Library' found its name.

Just like its name, this striking holiday home is totally unexpected. The panoramic glass sliding doors take you straight into the heart of the property. A spacious and impressive living and dining area where guests can indulge with friends and family, or relax taking in the views.

Carefully selected interiors and art pieces create an inspiring and eclectic living area. Well-considered artwork adorns the walls throughout. This holiday home with a games table is perfect fun for the kids (and big kids). A luxury lodge style home, its distinctive features set the scene for a memorable stay for years to come.

There are three bedrooms in the main house, plus a stylish fourth bedroom in the separate annex - ideal for a couple looking for some privacy.

Master bedroom has a fixed king-sized bed, fantastic feature bath, and a separate toilet.

The second bedroom has a fixed king-sized bed. The third bedroom is a cosy twin room, with two single beds. There is also a house bathroom these rooms share with a large walk-in shower.

The separate annex provides a large bedroom with a private outdoor seating area. The super king-size bed can be split into a twin bed setup. The en-suite bathroom is a wet room with a shower, modern and well suited to guests with reduced mobility. This spacious room has plenty of space for a cot or z-bed, and outside its own private seating area.

Designed and built by acclaimed writer, art collector and curator Greville Worthington, this striking lodge near the historic market town of Richmond was inspired by a Japanese wood burning craft that preserves and enhances timber over time. New York Public Library was created as a calming Yorkshire retreat for guests of all ages, with a distinctive dark wood exterior unlike any other luxury holiday home.

The lodge overlooks private parkland and woodlands, with outdoor spaces for both relaxation and entertainment. Guests can enjoy the jacuzzi style garden hot tub, cook at the Patagonia Grill Station or wood fired pizza oven, and gather around the fire pit while children explore the treehouse.

The garden also features an art installation by architect and designer Amanda Levete, while Sour Beck runs through the field beyond the grounds, with picnic spots and a short walk to the bluebell woodland gardens with rare trees and shrubs.

The main door into New York Public Library is at the rear of the house. It is accessed from the raised decking surrounding the property. There are 2 steps up from the gravel car park which has plenty of space for 4 cars. The steps onto the deck are more challenging for guests with reduced mobility. However, one up it is all on one level outside and the separate annex has step-free access. The outdoor pizza oven and al fresco dining area are on the same level of decking as the house, with one step down to the jacuzzi-style hot tub.

There is a step down between the kitchen and the living and dining areas. The large floor-to-ceiling windows open almost the full width of the front of the house, with a small lip (rather than a step) to the outside.

Upstairs, the house bathroom has a large walk-in shower. The master bedroom has a fantastic roll-top bath which sits at the end of the bed, offering uninterrupted views of the Yorkshire countryside. The two larger bedrooms have access to the large outdoor balcony. The twin bedroom can only be set as twin beds.

The separate annex sits on one level, giving a ground floor bedroom and en-suite wet room with a shower, making it well suited to guests with reduced mobility. The annex is a spacious room, well-suited to holidays with a baby or couples wanting a bit of space to themselves.

In The Area

New York Public Library is fantastic because it feels wonderfully secluded, yet there are shops less than a mile away. Stock up for the outdoor Patagonian grilling station by heading to Premier Meats in Colburn for a wide choice and a small greengrocer.

The property is a couple of miles from the market town of Richmond, North Yorkshire, commonly known as ‘The Gateway to The Dales’. With its 11th Century castle, fine historic buildings, cobbled market place, and hidden corners, it is a treasure trove for visitors. We recommend Rustique, a popular French restaurant, and Barretts for the food. Millgate House Gardens overlooks the River Swale and is described as “one of the most surprising gardens in the North of England”.
