North Yorkshire boasts a huge range of days out and fun activities to keep families entertained. From scenic walking trails and National Trust sites to family-friendly attractions there’s plenty to suit your family’s idea of the perfect Yorkshire break.

Here is a quick guide to some of the family-friendly activities and events in the local area in Summer 2025.

UK breaks for families

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

With acres of space and stunning grounds, a family day out at Fountain’s Abbey and Studley Royal near Ripon, North Yorkshire is always a popular choice. Kids will love the wide open spaces, adventure playgrounds, and a well-earned ice-cream from the cafe. This summer, head along and enjoy the Summer of Play, running from 19th July to the end of August where you’ll find activity stations, games and on Tuesdays a two-hour circus skills workshop!

If you’re looking for a fun day out, Stockeld Park is a family favourite during a Yorkshire family break. This summer, from 19th July until 1st September, enjoy their festival-themed events each day, with live performers including music acts, magicians and more. From the magical Enchanted Forest, hidden playgrounds and zip wire to the slides and interactive play activities there’s plenty to entertain little ones.

Experience a real slice of Yorkshire at the Wensleydale Show in Leyburn on 23rd August. This year’s Great Yorkshire Show is set to be bigger and better than ever! From 8th to 11th July, this iconic four-day event celebrates the best of farming, food and countryside at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate. You’ll find a huge and varied timetable of family-friendly events from cooking demonstrations, celebrity appearances, demonstrations and dedicated family areas.

Newby Hall

Newby Hall‘s award-winning gardens, miniature railway, and adventure playground make it hugely popular with families in North Yorkshire! And this year, on 23rd August, they are hosting the Fireworks Championships which is sure to be a memorable experience. Pack a picnic and watch the stunning fireworks displays choreographed to music set against the beautiful Yorkshire skies.

Castle Howard Outdoor Cinema

If you’re looking for a more relaxing day out, the outdoor cinema at Castle Howard this summer is your chance to sit back and unwind among the stunning grounds of this historic house. The outdoor cinema has a range of children’s films showing at the end of July including the Gruffalo’s Child and Zog. Make sure to leave enough time to discover the wonderful gardens, playgrounds and acres of space to run around.

Catterick Racecourse

Bring the family along to a unique day out at Summer Festival Family Day at Catterick Racecourse on 24th July. Alongside six exciting races, families can enjoy a pirate ship assault course and bouncy castles in the course enclosure!
