About Hollins Farmhouse

A stunning rural setting awaits at Hollins Farmhouse in the heart of Wensleydale. This fabulous house boasts breath-taking views across the river Yore to Witton Fell, and was completely renovated in 2021. Sleeping 10 adults and 2 young children, Hollins is ideal for both multi-generational families or a group of friends. The horse-training town of Middleham is on the doorstep, making Hollins Farmhouse a perfect location from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales.

INSIDE

Make your way across the characterful flagstone courtyard and into a large boot room. The country charm starts here, as you hang up coats, and put wellies and the dog lead away after a day exploring. Through a generous utility room with a Belfast sink and washing machine, step into a warm and welcoming open-plan kitchen-diner. Beyond is the cloakroom and useful cellar space for luggage and items not required upstairs.

The light and airy farmhouse kitchen is a joy to cook in with an incredible view. Well-equipped, there is a double electric oven and hob, American-style fridge freezer, microwave, and plenty of work surfaces from which to serve up delicious home-cooked meals. Gather around the large dining table, in front of the roaring open fire, and make happy memories with family and friends. The terracotta tiles are one of many original features leading to the terrace door and that view! The terrace is a great place to sit out in sight of the kitchen and the garden gazebo.

On the ground floor, gather in one of two living rooms. A large sitting room with high ceilings and seating for ten includes an L-shape sofa, open jet-master fire, and window seats in front of a south-facing bay window.

The smaller study also has a comfy sofa, two armchairs, and seats five. It’s an ideal room to unwind in as the fire crackles away and a film plays on the LED TV with Netflix. The ideal room for those seeking peace and quiet; there is a desk for a quiet hour’s work or it is a room for kids to escape to.

There is a purpose-built stand-alone office in the courtyard with wi-fi; a place which is ideal for those keeping in touch with work or revising for exams.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

Five generous bedrooms are found on the first and second floors. On the first floor, the large master bedroom has a dressing table, plenty of storage, and south-facing windows that command stunning views across the River Yore. This and the second bedroom boast original fireplaces, high ceilings, and televisions for lazy mornings in bed. Each is a zip-and-link bed that can be made as a super-king or twins, and they share a bathroom with a bath and shower and a separate cloakroom with a sink.

The third and fourth bedrooms on the first floor are stylishly decorated with chic country touches and a window seat for enjoying the view. They share a family bathroom with a bath and a separate shower.

Up the carpeted staircase, on the second floor is a pretty bedroom with a vaulted ceiling, painted beams, and a smart TV for lounging in bed. Across the landing find a generous bathroom with a large roll-top bath aligned for a perfect view of Penn Hill further up Wensleydale. This is a wonderfully quiet spot for an indulgent soak after a long day of exploring the Dales.

On the first floor, you’ll also find a small snug so the family has space to spread out. Two built-in beds accommodate young children with a maximum height of 5ft4.

Outside

On the South-side of the house is an attractive and sheltered garden with a stunning backdrop. Rustic brick and stone pointed walls, a well-kept lawn and a flagstone terrace offer an ideal setting for alfresco dining on a warm day. In the corner of this walled space is a stunning gazebo offering welcome shade or shelter.

The gazebo is a masterclass in craftsmanship, with beautiful pine beams. It comfortably seats twelve, and with its own lighting and stunning views is the perfect place to dine on a warm evening.

The Practicalities

The house sleeps 10 guests plus 2 young children, using the fixed daybeds in the snug / bedroom 6. These are only suitable for children under 5ft 4. Families with young children can request a cot and a high chair free of charge.

Linen, towels, logs for the three fires, a small selection of toiletries, and a locally sourced welcome hamper are all included in this large luxury holiday home. The brand-new kitchen includes a breakfast bar, large American fridge-freezer, an electric range cooker, dishwasher, and full kitchen inventory for a home from home experience. There is wi-fi throughout and plenty of parking alongside a neighbouring barn outside.

Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at a small additional cost per night. They are certain to enjoy the many walks in the area but please be respectful of livestock on all footpaths.

In the Area

Hollins Farmhouse is a wonderful location for swapping the hustle and bustle for a leisurely country escape. The house is located on the national cycle network and is less than 1km from the Tour de France Grand Depart route of 2014. There is a network of stunning footpaths on the doorstep. Set out along the path that winds alongside the River Cover in Coverdale. Head to the historic stepping stones and further up-river to the Hallo Bridge. Loop back via East Witton to call by the famous The Blue Lion dining pub, or closer to home call in at an iconic local pub The Cover Bridge Inn.

Middleham is a 5-minute drive away, or a gorgeous 2 mile walk along the river Yore. The Middleham gallops on the low and high moor are a must to see the racehorses exercising at dawn. Record leading flat trainer Mark Johnston is always around if you are up early enough! Middleham Castle is steeped in history not least as home to Richard III whilst Duke of York. The town is small and charming, with an excellent village shop, four pubs, a tearoom, takeaway fish and chips, and local shops.

There are many views and walks further up Wensleydale and into Swaledale; the location for much of the original All Creatures Great and Small series.  The views from the top of Witton Fell and Penn Hill on a clear day are hard to beat 1 and 3 miles away. Aysgarth Falls, Malham Cove, and Bolton Castle are just a few of the many interesting and impressive sites in the immediate Yorkshire Dales locality.

Leyburn lies 4 miles west of Hollins and offers an excellent array of local shops, cafés, and traditional pubs. Campbell’s is an award-winning, family-owned supermarket to stock up in, and we recommend the weekly Friday market.

The Forbidden Corner is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies, and surprises that will delight families of all ages. We also highly recommend the peace and tranquillity of nearby Jervaulx Abbey, followed by a bite in the Abbey tearoom or a famous Brymor ice cream!
