Woodcroft Cottage, Hudswell

Woodcroft Cottage is a cosy two-bedroom holiday cottage with private parking in Hudswell, North Yorkshire is perfect for a small family looking for an escape to the country. Enjoy all the local attractions that Yorkshire has to offer, hassle-free from the doorstep.

Just a short walk from the cottage is a children’s play area to entertain the kids for hours and the George & Dragon, a Camra award-winning Yorkshire pub for mum and dad to enjoy. It is just a few doors down, with good beer as well as well-reviewed pub grub.

If you fancy getting outdoors, explore the 300 Hudswell Steps in the village to Richmond. The scenic River Swals walks offer plenty of woodland footpaths and grassed flower meadows, and you end up in the historic market town of Richmond. The market town has plenty to offer all ages including a medieval Castle, restaurants, cafés and plenty of picnic spots along the way.

Less than a 30-minute drive from Woodcroft Cottage is Thorp Perrow, where the whole family can enjoy spending time exploring acres of stunning woodland. The children can spend time in the adventure play area with swings, zip-line, slides and an adventurous assault course before, meeting exotic birds of prey and animals including meerkats and wallabies at Thorp Perrow Arboretum.

If you would prefer a more relaxing break, Woodcroft Cottage offers family-friendly fun and a chance to catch up in luxury surroundings. There are cosy interiors, a log burner to snuggle up at night, and the cottage has a hot tub to relax in – perfect for when the kids are in bed! There is even an Xbox and games to keep them entertained.

Sheep Dip, Gayles Hall Barns

Travelling with children definitely doesn’t mean compromising on luxury and style at Sheep Dip, our stunning two-bedroom barn conversion at Gayles Hall Barns. Perfect for your first family trip, this luxury cottage offers all the modern comforts needed, including two bedrooms and bathrooms, a boot room, a stylish kitchen and a living area with a log burner. Jump in the car and within a 15-minute drive, you will find Barnard Castle, a popular location for our guests with a bustling high street with a wide choice of interesting shops, cafés, pubs, and restaurants, as well as Barnard Castle and Raby Castle to explore.

Children will love discovering the collections at The Bowes Museum with a guidebook from reception. It guides you through the museum and gardens using interactive games and activities. The new Story Garden offers tales of adventure and feats of daring-do. There is a play area and woodland walks for sunny days in the outdoors. Keep a lookout for the family activity days and art and craft workshops, at weekends and during the school holidays.

On your way home, make sure you stop off at Mainsgill Farmshop and Tearoom which offers a vast selection of award-winning local produce. Meanwhile, the kids can meet the animals on the farm, which include Doris, Delilah, and Camelot the camels, as well as llamas, lambs and pigs. Make sure you pop in and check on the ewes during lambing season too!

For National Trust members, we recommend the captivating Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal near Ripon, North Yorkshire. This World Heritage Site has trails and footpaths, workshops, and a deer park. Harewood House, Helmsley, and York are also great spots for a day out with the family in North Yorkshire.

They host family fun craft sessions, a weekly baby cinema club, as well as rhythm time every Friday morning to get you in the swing!

Whilst staying at Darcy Mews the best way to explore with the kids is by downloading the Richmond Treasure Hunt Trail, a code busting tour of the town that gives you essential clues on statues and signs to search for the treasure. This route is packed with fantastic sights like Richmond Castle, Culloden Tower, The Friary and loads more and is perfect for all ages!

For a day out with a difference, nearby is the award-winning Forbidden Corner, which is full of surprises around every corner with tunnels, chambers, and follies to explore. The ideal day out for any brave adventurers and those young at heart! After the family has tired themselves out, head next door to eat at the Saddle Room – we recommend booking the Tack Room Table to feel like you are at the races whilst enjoying the fabulous menu of local food and ales.

Another great day out with the family during your stay is at Bolton Castle. Their programme is packed with events and family activities, including archery, birds of prey displays and guided tours by costumed characters. Visit the Wild Boar Park and watch the hungry piggies be fed, check out the bee observation hive and see the local rare breed sheep including Wensleydales.
