Whitby is not your traditional coastal town, famous for its Blue Flag beaches, some of Yorkshire’s best fish and chips, its fascinating history and culture as well as its ancient vampire legends. Whitby has endless charm and surprising contrasts. Climb the 199 steps to the atmospheric Whitby Abbey which dominates the skyline, towering over cobbled streets to the picturesque beach and working harbour with brightly coloured fishing vessels passing by.
Steeped in history, there is something for all ages. Follow in the footsteps of both Bram Stoker and find his inspiration behind his classic horror novel Dracula, or head to the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, where Captain Cook came to serve his apprenticeship in Whitby in the 17th century. This charming fishing village of Staithes has so much to offer, with its winding streets, fishermen’s cottages, towering cliffs, choppy sea and cosy harbour. One of the largest fishing ports on the North East coast, home to locally built boats, now used by local fishermen to catch cod, lobsters and crabs. It is a popular base for discovering the delights of rock pooling and fossil hunting on the small sandy beach, with the area nicknamed the ‘Dinosaur Coast’ so keep your eyes open!
The soaring, rugged cliffs make Staithes a great place for walking and exploring as well as those interested in fine art, geology and getting back to nature.
The beauty of the village has always lent itself to art and has a long history of well-known painters, including a small group of artists known as the “Staithes Group” which can be viewed at the local gallery.
If you have young children, you may recognise beautiful Staithes as the location for the much loved CBBC series Old Jacks Boat, featuring Bernard Cribbins, who tells tall stories from inside his old fishing boat, accompanied by Salty, his faithful dog.
This is Yorkshire’s coastline at its most beautiful. Explore this picturesque old fishing village with brooding cliffs, picturesque dwellings and cobbled alleyways, over a huddle of red roofed former fishing cottages that spill right down to the edge of the coast – a fact that 18th-century smugglers used to hide their illicit trade.
This is a great family day out, perfect for anyone who loves unusual architecture and breathtaking scenery with its sandy unspoilt beach, as well as rock pools and ancient fossils to discover.
