Known as the ‘The Gateway to The Dales’
Recognised as one of Britain’s most beautiful market towns, Richmond’s streets are full of history… Explore the 11th-century castle and its 100-foot-high historical tower at Richmond Castle, which offers impressive views over Swaledale and is the oldest stone Norman castle in England, built by William the Conqueror’s cousin. Wander down the cobbled streets to see other fine historic buildings, the cobbled market place is a treasure trove for visitors looking for a mix of culture, restaurants, shopping and a weekly Saturday market.
After a stroll around the castle walls, walk along the riverside and take in Richmond Falls, afterwards recharge and reward yourself with a treat from the award-winning bakery found in The Station, a stunning riverside Victorian railway building. When you visit, don’t forget your walking boots and ordnance survey maps as you’ll soon embrace the great outdoors. If you prefer more of an amble, wander from the Station along the banks of the River Swale up to another English Heritage site, Easby Abbey. The atmospheric ruins date from the 12th Century; incredibly striking these are definitely worth a visit.

No.29
One of our top recommendations for couples is No.29 on Frenchgate. A much-loved stop on our Richmond ale trail as well as a tapas bar, this is the perfect stop for a variety of Spanish dishes served with a smile. You can come for just a drink, or stay for some food. Sit by the window and watch the world go by as locals and tourists make their way to and from the market place of Richmond.
