As the temperatures warm and the evenings are light, there’s no better time to take a break with family or friends. We have the insider’s guide to late availability and what to do while away on your (well-deserved) spontaneous Summer break.
Making the most of the sun can mean quiet cottage gardens or lakeside terraces. You may prefer houses by walking routes, or an evening’s BBQ lounging on luxury outdoor furniture. Either way we’ve got you covered; every Home has something special to enjoy. And if you have kids (and big kids) to entertain, we’ve pulled out our top tips close to our luxury escapes so you don’t have to.
There’s so much to do in God’s Own County that the list could go on. So here are our favourite spots, for an active 48 hours or more…
The Forbidden Corner
We often recommend it, becuase this unique labyrinth of tunnels and follies at Tupgill Park in the Yorkshire Dales always delivers. The Forbidden Corner is an award-winning attraction unlike anywhere else, ideal for the adventurers and those young at heart! It can be a bit scary for little ones, luckily delicious food at The Saddle Rooms will distract them.
The perfect way to cool off this summer, and good for all ages and group sizes. On Ellerton Lakes you will find these activity enthusiasts encouraging you to spend a few hours exploring the great outdoors. Join them to improve your paddle boarding skills, build rafts, go canoeing, and even trying rock climbing.
There are quaint Yorkshire beaches or the bustle of Whitby, and our perfect balance is exploring Runswick Bay. With rock pools and fossil hunting, red roofed cottages and sweeping beaches, it’s an idyllic place. Enjoy the coastal walks – part of the The Cleveland Way – and it is also a safe swimming spot making it family friendly. Make sure to head to the fish and chip shop for a naughty yet delicious lunch.
Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre, York
Step back in time and experience Shakespeare as it was in his day with comic mayhem and battles. Reed-thatched buildings make up the Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre pop up, located at the foot of Clifford’s Tower in the historic heart of York. The theatre in it’s ssecond year, after such a well-received launch. There’s also the finest Yorkshire food and drinks from God’s Own Pantry onsite until the theatre closed on 1 September 2019.
For the Foodies...
We have definitely pinched a strapline from our friends at Welcome To Yorkshire, but with so much farmland and fishing to be had in the area Yorkshire really is God’s Own Pantry. We use lots of locally sourced produce from artisan bakers and local dairies in our welcome hampers, and for places to eat our team are surprisingly hot on market research in this area.
Farmer’s Markets are incredibly important to the local community and a lovely feature for visitors to the area. In nearby Richmond, Northallerton or Leyburn you will find our favourite fishmongers, butchers and locally grown veg. Further afield, the market at Malton each month is a hub for local suppliers and serious foodies.
Good pubs and restaurants are in abundance, it is one of the things Yorkshire is best known for. There is always good feedback about the Black Bull at Moulton. For true Yorkshire Dales foodie delight, we recommend The Punchbowl Inn in Swaledale. On the edge of the Yorkshire Moors is the beautiful village of Osmotherley, and the team behind The Golden Lion have run an excellent pub for years. In the market towns, there’s always a choice, and if you head to York or Harrogate, there’s so much to sample.
Tea Rooms and Cafés are aplenty in the area. You’re not a local until you’ve tried Betty’s, the famous and quaint Tea Room in Northallerton or Harrogate. For our properties close to Richmond, the River Swale to Easby Abbey walk must be followed by coffee and cake or something from the artisan bakery at The Station. The Rusty Bike in Swainby is an excellent post walk or bike ride on the North York Moors stop off.
If you want Michelin Starred restaurants, Yorkshire has five of them. Though we can’t guarantee you’ll get in for August… The Yorke Arms at Pateley Bridge from Frances Atkins (one of only 6 female UK Michelin-starred chefs) and the Star Inn at Harome from Andrew Pern are both excellent.
Otherwise, why not dine in with our amazing partner in-house chefs. You don’t need to head into town as you’re in the comfort of your own five-star standard holiday home. Plus the menu is bespoke to you – bliss!
We’re well known for being dog-friendly and still luxurious, so don’t leave man’s best friend behind on your last-minute break in Yorkshire. It is the perfect motivation to get you exploring the stunning countryside!
In the northern Dales, a great starting point after a walk with amazing views is dog-friendly stop-off The Farmers Arms in the pretty village of Muker. On the other side of Reeth is Leyburn, where after a trip to Aysgarth Falls or Middleham Castle, the 250-year-old King’s Arms at Askrigg caters for hungry and thirsty travellers.
Among the shops in Masham, the cosy Bay Horse pub is 5 minutes’ walk from the River Ure and not far from the family friendly Lightwater Valley. For the older explorers don’t miss Masham’s two breweries!
Byland Abbey is a stunning ruin on the edge of the Moors and a lovely family friendly day out. For lunch we like to head for to The Cocoa Tree in Helmsley or The Park in Hovingham.
